This major funding stream, of $100,000-$150,000, is only the second of its kind offered by PIA. It supports a transformational or foundational visual arts initiative in the GTA in 2025. After careful deliberation, the Special Project Committee has selected the project by BAND (Black Artists’ Networks In Dialogue), entitled Foundations of Continuity: The expansion and reimagining of BAND’s Gallery and Cultural Centre in Toronto. 19 Brock Street will become Toronto’s home for Black artistic expression, a self-sustaining hub for exhibitions, artist residencies, workshops, and dialogue.
PIA’s support will enable BAND to complete these essential renovations, establishing a legacy building institution with a lasting impact on both the local and global artistic landscapes.

A Landmark for Black Contemporary Art:
The renovation will establish museum-quality galleries, introduce new opportunities for artists to experiment across disciplines, and develop an extensive archive dedicated to documenting the contributions of Black artists within the contemporary art landscape. Working with architect Dami Akinbode of Diamond Schmitt, the redesigned space will seamlessly blend Victorian architecture with modern design, becoming a landmark for Black contemporary art in Toronto. This project is far more than an infrastructural upgrade; it reimagines the gallery with a focus on accessibility and care. The goal is to foster nuanced dialogue among Black artists from various regions, promoting deeper intercommunal engagement across local communities and broader cultural networks.
PIA is proud to support this ambitious initiative, reinforcing our commitment to enriching Toronto’s arts community in meaningful, innovative, and impactful ways. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting transformation!
