Between the Current and the Echo

Partners in Art is proud to support the Varley Art Gallery of Markham’s upcoming exhibition, Between the Current and the Echo, on view from May 24 to September 1, 2025. Curated by Anik Glaude, the exhibition features works by Z’otz Collective, a multidisciplinary trio composed of Nahúm Flores, Erik Jerezano, and Ilyana Martínez. It will be presented at the Varley Art Gallery of Markham.

This summer, the Varley Art Gallery welcomes Z’otz* Collective, a group of artists of Latin American heritage known for their collaborative approach to art-making. Merging drawing, painting, ceramics, and animation, their work is rooted in storytelling, blending traditional influences with contemporary experimentation. Since 2004, the Collective has cultivated a unique, communal process—passing works between members to create layered, evolving compositions. Their art is characterized by bold lines, surreal imagery, and hybrid creatures inspired by mythology, folk art, and pre-Columbian motifs.

Between the Current and the Echo celebrates co-creation, challenging the notion of the solitary artist. Through spontaneity and shared authorship, Z’otz* Collective explores identity, mythology, and storytelling, offering a dynamic model of artistic collaboration. Funding from PIA will support an exhibition catalogue and expanded public engagement opportunities.
