Bonavista Biennale

Bonavista Biennale

Partners in Art is proud to support the 2025 Bonavista Biennale taking place August 16 – September 14, 2025. This project features 20+ regional, national and international contemporary artists, as curated by Heather Igloliorte and Rose Bouthillier. This project will be on view throughout the Bonavista Peninsula of Newfoundland.

The Biennale takes place in unconventional indoor and outdoor settings on the Bonavista Peninsula. Exhibition sites include heritage homes, commercial buildings, community halls, old schools, historic sites, beaches, meadows, cliffsides, and more. Artists are invited to engage in the selection of their site, and have the opportunity to respond to the specific environmental, architectural and cultural qualities of their chosen building or outdoor location. The Biennale produces focused, immersive encounters, with each artist’s vision fully realized at their site.

Within this unique context, the Biennale encourages artists to push their practice and take risks outside of a typical gallery setting. The Biennale supports artists working in all mediums, including sculpture and installation, textiles, painting and drawing, video, sound, performance and social practice.

For the 2025 Bonavista Biennale, Igloliorte is particularly interested in exploring notions of time (in connection to islands, rural, remote, and northern places – the peripheries of the art world), collectivity and community, interdependence, collaborative world-building and resourcefulness. Prioritizing Indigenous worldviews, Queer and BIPOC expression, folk and local histories, and slow-making practices, the 2025 Biennale will centre relationship-building and exchanges between artists from across the province, throughout the country, and around the world.
