The commission, The Long Doorway by Toronto-based artist Deanna Bowen, took as its starting point a 1956 CBC teledrama, which tells the story of a young black lawyer who is assigned to represent a young white student who has assaulted a black student. Bowen’s project re-inserted this forgotten teledrama into the present moment through script readings, performances and a video installation. PIA’s support enabled Bowen to realize this ambitious and relevant work and presented it to audiences in Toronto and abroad, thereby extending the exposure of this important artist across Canada and internationally.
